RECIPE: Brandy Sour

I figured I’d start simple. And what could be simpler than a Brandy Sour? I’m so glad this recipe is in The Mixing Master, because even people with no mixing skills whatsoever *raises hand* will be hard pressed to screw this one up.

Ingredients:

In a mixing glass, muddle lemon and sugar. Add shaved ice, brandy and rum. Shake. Strain into a Delmonico glass. Serve with orange slice.

Notes:

In this context, a jigger is 2 oz (most modern measuring guides seem to list it as 1.5 oz), and a barspoon of sugar equals 1 tablespoon. That sounds like a lot, but I found that the 1/2 lemon dialed it back quite a bit. I also liked the addition of a dash of rum – I’m not sure if modern versions of this drink include that…? Discuss!

Oh, and I don’t have a collection of vintage glassware myself, but obviously anything of a similar size or volume to the serving suggestion will do.

And lastly, for the curious at heart, here’s a marvelous article by Jeanette Hurt that gets to the bottom of that burning question – “How much is actually in a DASH?”.
